I am a psychiatrist with additional training in classic dynamic work and medical-psychiatric issues.
My Psychosomatic Medicine background allows me to be more attuned to psychological issues that arise in people who suffer from medical illnesses (like cancer or heart disease) and how they may be intertwined. I will generally be more alert to potential medical interactions with medications you may already be taking. I will also be more aware of specific psychological struggles that go along with having particular medical illness.
My psychoanalytic (classical) background allows me to work with you in a deeper and more meaningful way. The dynamic approach allows all aspects of your mind to be examined, including but not limited to, conscious and unconscious ideas. We know that the unconscious exists (such as when someone makes a mistake in speech, when one "zones out," through dreams, and through "gut" feelings) and that it is a very real and very powerful force that influences us daily whether we realize it or not. This may explain why sometimes you may feel a "disconnect" between what you logically know and what you feel inside. I am interested in helping you discover more about who you are, why you may have persistent struggles with the same issues in life, and to help lessen (and perhaps even eliminate) that disconnect.
I offer my skills as a psychopharmacologist (a person who works with various medications) to help you achieve symptom reduction. I do believe that medications are often useful in helping people but often are not enough. Think of it this way: medications are needed to help you feel better but often do not target the inner sufferings; you may benefit from therapy as well to deal with that, but onIy after medications help reduce the initial symptoms. I also work as a psychotherapist either with or without medication management...it all depends on what you need in your situation.
I do offer services in working with couples in marital/family therapy as well.
I generally see adults. I may see some adolescents age 16 and older depending on the problem at hand.
